Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I size a precast catch basin or inlet correctly?
You must ensure the unit is large enough for the biggest pipe AND maintain the minimum 6-inch structural leg between pipe openings. The pipe opening is typically the pipe I.D. plus wall thickness, and most cutouts are made 4 inches larger than the pipe O.D. to allow alignment tolerance. Too many openings, openings too close, or oversized penetrations can compromise structural integrity and watertightness.
Are precast concrete catch basins strong enough for heavy traffic and long-term performance?
Yes. They are steel-reinforced, designed to handle surface surcharge, wheel loads, lateral loads, buoyant forces, and point loads, and provide structural strength without relying on imported fill. They also have proven 100+ year service life, excellent freeze-thaw resistance, corrosion resistance, and strong buoyancy performance.
Why would I choose precast catch basins over poured-in-place?
Precast offers faster installation, consistent quality, verified engineering, and availability in standard and customizable sizes. Units can be installed and backfilled quickly, are commonly stocked by local manufacturers, and can include pre-formed or pre-installed penetrations to speed up field work.
