Who's the End User?
The first step to understanding sewer and drainage specifications is to find out who the end user or owner will be. Who will be maintaining the system whether it be a sewer treatment plant, lift station, manhole, or catch basin? Figure out which municipality or utility owns the project.
Dive in
Once you understand who the end user is, it's time to dive in. There are no cliff notes or easy way to read specifications. You can find specifications on the municipalities' or organizations' websites. Print them out and review them. Not only should you study the specifications, but also the standard details. If you do not want to get into the weeds of things, another option would be to partner with a precaster or specialty contractor. They have studied these specifications, so you do not have to.
